How to you hydrate?

When I was a “badass” living in New York City, I got into amateur motocross racing. Of course I though that “gatorade” was the best thing for me to drink. They even brought a gatorade tanker truck to the race tracks and let you fill up for free. Talk about “moving the free line”, a very successful marketing tactic.

I don’t know if you realize this but sports drinks, like gatorade, and seemingly healthy fruit drinks contain sugar.

So, those types of athletic sport drinks can be fine is you are a serious athlete. But for the average person who gets some average or not much activity during the week this is not the greatest thing for your health.

Sports drinks are not for the weekend warriors

If you are the average person who works out in the gym a few days a week, or who doesn’t work out much and is a weekend warrior, the sugar in sports drinks is probably not benefiting you. Not to mention those energy gels and similar things that you can find in your local outdoor store or nutrition shop.

If you are not regularly active but drink an energy drink or pomegranete juice as you are doing yard work on the weekend, that sugar is going to you fat cells. Not only making you fat but also causing fatty liver (yes, sugar and inactivity can do that), causing blood sugar, hormonal (for men and women) and digestive problems to say the least.

Another thing to mention is that ingesting refined sugar will cause your nervous system to function in a “sympathetic dominance” which means that you will be burning sugar for energy instead of fat for energy. Burning sugar gives you short term sprint energy and burning fat gives you long term endurance energy.

Here is the rundown on some sports drinks from a Details Magazine article by Heather Hurlock:

  • Smartwater: 0 grams of sugar
  • Nuerosport: 12 grams of sugar
  • O.N.E. Coconut Water: 19 grams of sugar
  • AlO Awaken: 30 grams of sugar
  • Vitamin Water XXX: 32.5 grams of sugar
  • POM Wonderful: 80 grams of sugar

Look at the top of the above list. You can hydrate just fine with Smartwater. It has no sugar. It’s steam distilled water and has electrolytes in it. There is no need for surgar, artificial sweeteners (which are worse than sugar) or artificial coloring.

Another great options is to drink regular water! Yes, your water doesn’t have to be smart, just wet and have no sugar or chemicals in it.

If you are a professional or serious athlete, someone who works out at a very high level on a regular basis for at least a few years, sports drinks can be ok for your. Just watch out for the artificial substitutes and synthetic vitamins that may be in there.

A good quality filtered water will do good. I prefer steam distilled water. I have the 5 1/2 gallon bottles delivered to my office and home. I keep a few 1 and 1 1/2 liter bottles around to fill up from home to take on trips or workouts.

I just recommend to stay away from “reverse osmosis” filtered water or any water that sounds like a scientist or physicist toyed around with it. These are things like alkaline water, penta water, ionized water, etc…

From my work with muscle testing or applied kinesiology, I have found that steam distilled or a good quality filtered water reacts well with people. Some of these manipulated waters do not test so well.
